These questions are often asked by current residents as they make decisions about housing for the next academic year.

Housing and Residential Communities (HRC) offers on-campus housing for returning students next academic year. The 2023-2024 housing application for current students will open in January 2023. Available space varies each year, depending on the size of the incoming freshman class and is not guaranteed except for students who must live on campus, e.g., students with housing scholarships. The housing deposit for returning students is $175.
No, a student’s housing contract covers the entire academic year and they need not reapply for the spring. Students may leave belongings in their room during Winter Break. HRC does not release students from contracts to move off campus or into Greek housing during the academic year.
Information about the recontracting process, and priority dates to participate in online room selection, will be available later this fall. The application will open in January 2023. Students will be allowed to apply for housing on a rolling basis, to ensure that adequate space is available.
Online room selection for eligible students will take place in the spring. Login dates will be emailed to eligible students.
Yes! Pull up to three roommates into a room depending on the style of hall selected. We require that all potential roommate(s) 1) complete the recontracting process and are eligible for campus housing, 2) have formed a roommate group with the student who wants to pull them in, and 3) meet eligibility for the selected community. For example, residents eligible for Honors Housing in Ridgecrest South cannot pull in a student not in the Honors College. Students with complete housing applications will have access to My College Roomie as a way to search for potential roommates and create roommate groups.
If you are eligible to pick a room during room selection but do not, HRC staff will make your assignment after incoming freshmen are assigned. As a result, your assignment may not be completed until mid or late summer. It is in your best interest to select a space when you have the opportunity to do so.
Space for returning students housing is generally available in apartment, suite style, and traditional halls (except for Tutwiler Hall). Students currently living in living-learning communities designated for freshmen cannot return to those communities. We do not guarantee that a student’s current space, or space in any specific hall, will be available for the 2023/2024 academic year.

If you change your mind about living on campus for another year after completing your recontracting application, you can receive a refund of your $140 prepayment by cancelling with HRC by May 1, 2023. To submit a cancellation request, please fill out the form online.

Once the contract term begins (day you take possession of the room or first day of classes, whichever comes first), HRC only cancels contracts for withdrawal from school, graduation, marriage, study abroad, or internship/student teaching/co-op. Moving to an apartment or sorority/fraternity house is not grounds for contract cancellation. Complete a contract cancellation form prior to the deadline designated by HRC.

HRC considers requests for housing based on medical need, with documentation from a medical provider. Submit the Medical Accommodation Request Form along with documentation of your condition by February 1, 2023, for the 2023/2024 academic year. We review all medical requests to determine whether or not to grant the request. If granted, HRC requires students meet all application and payment deadlines in order to meet eligibility for housing. Space may not allow HRC to meet requests submitted after the deadline. Students who receive a medical accommodation one year must reach out to Housing in subsequent years regarding need and availability.
